Aldabra Tortoise

[Adopt a Tortoise](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Tortoise) Aldabra tortoises are the second largest land tortoise. They have a thick, domed carapace (upper part of the shell) that is dark grey to black in color. Their limbs are thick and covered in scales, and they have a small, pointed head. Aldabra tortoises do not have teeth, but instead use their beak to tear apart their food.

Asian Small-Clawed Otter

[Adopt an Otter](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Asian%20Small-Clawed%20Otter) Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest of the world's thirteen otter species, typically measuring two to three feet long from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail, and often weighing less than ten pounds. They are dark brown across most of their body with gray, white, or cream-colored fur around their faces and throat. Their front feet don't have as much webbing between the toes as most other otter species — which gives the toes extra flexibility — but they have short, blunt claws that give the species its name.

Meerkat

[Adopt a Meerkat](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Meerkat) These long-bodied, desert dwellers are a member of the mongoose family. They possess many adaptations perfect for a hot, dry environment. The darker regions around their eyes serve as "sunglasses" of sorts, to reduce the glare from the harsh sunlight. Their bodies are a tan color with darker brown spots or stripes on their back.

East African Crowned Crane

[Adopt a Crane](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=East%20African%20Crowned%20Crane) The stunning "crown" that gives these birds their name is a key adaptation. This allows the cranes to blend in with the tall grasses, making avoiding predators and catching prey a much easier task. These birds are very tall, with slender legs and large feet adapted for spending a lot of time standing, wading, and walking. Their coloring is quite striking, with blue eyes in a white face framed by black feathers and a red wattle, light gray feathers below the head and down the neck, and dark gray or black on the flight feathers and top of the back. The rest of their wing is a light cream or white color, with bright yellow feathers near the base of the tail, and the tail itself is red to reddish-brown in color.

Black-And-White Ruffed Lemur

[Adopt a Lemur](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Black-and-White%20Ruffed%20Lemur) As the name suggests, black and white ruffed lemurs have black and white colored bodies, but these markings differ between individuals. The general pattern is black hands, feet, tail, and facial markings with a patch of white fur on their head. Their eyes are a bright orange or yellow.

African Wild Dog

[Adopt an African Wild Dog](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=African%20Wild%20Dog) African wild dogs, also called painted dogs, are members of the canid family and have mottled coats of yellow, black, and white. Each individual dog has a unique coat pattern that can be used to tell them apart. They are long-legged and slender with a relatively large tail that is often tipped in white. Unlike other canids, African wild dogs do not have dewclaws on their front feet and have coats that only consist of guard hairs with no undercoat. They also have large ears which are used for thermoregulation and provide an acute sense of hearing.

Southern White Rhinocerous

[Adopt a Rhino](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Rhino) White rhinoceros are also known as the square-lipped rhino because of their broad lips used for grazing. They can be distinguished from other rhino species by their long skull and more pronounced shoulder hump. White rhinos have two horns with the front horn averaging two feet in length. Rhinos belong to the perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulate, family, having three toes per foot.

Grizzly Bear

[Adopt a Bear](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Grizzly%20Bear) Grizzly bears are a subspecies, or type, of brown bear and get their name from the white and tan tips on their brown fur that make them look "grizzled". Though called "brown" bears, these bears can range in color from cream to almost black. Brown bears have a large hump of muscle over their shoulders and powerful claws for digging. Though their eyesight and hearing are equivalent to that of humans, they have an excellent sense of smell.

Jaguar

[Adopt a Jaguar](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Jaguar) The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. Jaguars typically have a tan or yellow coat with black spots called rosettes, but some jaguars can be melanistic, meaning they are all black with barely visible rosettes. These cats are incredibly powerful and are able to take down prey several times their size, such as tapirs. They have the second strongest jaws in the mammal kingdom, which helps them consume a wide variety of prey in their native habitats.

African Lion

[Adopt a Lion](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Lion) The African lion is a large, light brown to brownish-orange cat species with a long, black-tufted tail. Lions are sexually dimorphic, meaning the male and female look different from one another. Adult male lions can have large fluffy manes while females do not. These manes serve a few purposes, including to attract females, and to protect the male lion's vulnerable neck region during a fight.

Linné's Two-Toed Sloth

[Adopt a Sloth](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Sloth) Linné's two-toed sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down from tree branches. They have long legs that end in curved claws for gripping (2 on the front feet, 3 on the back). Their undercoat of short, fine fur provides warmth, while their grayish-brown overcoat provides camouflage due to the growth of green algae. Two-toed sloths have long bodies and short necks with 5 neck vertebrae (most mammals have 7). Their internal organs are anchored to the ribs and arranged differently than in other mammals to support their hanging lifestyle. Sloth teeth grow continuously and lack enamel. Due to the tannins in their food, their teeth turn black over time. Sloths are most closely related to anteaters.

Andean Bear

[Adopt a Bear](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Andean%20Bear) Andean bears are also known as "spectacled" bears due to the tan coloration often found around their eyes, resembling spectacles or eyeglasses. These tan markings may also continue onto the chests of these bears, allowing researchers in the wild to identify individuals, as well as giving the bears the scientific name of Tremarctos ornatus, or "decorated bear".

Baird's Tapir

[Adopt a Tapir](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Tapir) Tapirs are the largest land mammals native to Central and South America. They are often confused for pigs, but are in the Perissodactyla order due to the odd number of toes (3) on their hind feet. This means that their closest relatives are horses and rhinoceroses. Their toes are spread out to allow them to move over muddy ground in the rainforest. One of the tapir's most distinctive features is an elongated snout that forms a flexible, prehensile proboscis. Young tapirs are born with white striping that allows them to camouflage among the dappled light coming through the trees.

Wildlife Carousel

Take a ride on a gibbon, anteater, or hummingbird! Located in the Zoo's front plaza, this American-made carousel features 30 different animal species from around the world. You can buy tickets or a multi-use pass at the admissions gate, or pay at the carousel entrance. Cash, check, or credit cards are accepted at both locations. Price: $4.00 per person $40.00 multi-use punch card with 12 rides(Kids under 42″ tall must have an adult on the carousel with them to ride, but the adult can stand alongside the rider at no charge.) Blue Duiker

[Adopt a Duiker](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Blue%20Duiker) Blue duikers are the smallest species of duiker and are in the antelope family. Hair color varies depending on population, but a gray-colored individual will appear blue when in the shade. Both males and females have short, sharp horns (though sometimes lacking in females), a light eyebrow ridge, and a dark tail with a white underside that is visible when flicked up. Scent glands are located near the rear hooves and below each eye (called preorbital glands).

Sweeping views transport your guests to the magnificence of the African savannah for a unique backdrop for weddings, receptions, corporate events or other amazing celebrations. Giraffe

[Adopt a Giraffe](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Giraffe) Giraffes are the tallest land mammal with long necks and legs. Their necks have 7 vertebrae like most mammals and are linked with ball and socket joints allowing for increased flexibility. Giraffes also have two horn-like structures covered in skin on the tops of their heads, called ossicones, which are used by males to compete for females. Subspecies of giraffes vary in patterns, but all are typically cream colored with darker brown patches aiding in camouflage.

Poison Dart Frog

[Adopt a Dart Frog](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Poison%20Dart%20Frog) Poison dart frogs are some of the most recognizable amphibians on the planet. Their bright colors and bold patterns serve as a warning to predators that their skin is toxic, an adaptation known as "aposematic coloration". Dart frogs can vary in size, but the largest species only reach between one and two inches in length.

Chilean Flamingo

[Adopt a Flamingo](https://reidparkzoo.org/get-involved/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Flamingo) This relatively large bird species is tall (47-57 inches) and slender with deep pink or even red/orange plumage. Secondary and primary wing feathers are black, and the rump, head, and neck of the species typically consists of the darkest shade of pink or red/orange. Their legs and neck are longer – in relation to body size – than any other bird species. Like most flamingo species, females tend to be about 20% smaller than the males.

Domestic Goat

[Adopt a Goat](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Domestic%20Goat) Goats were domesticated roughly 10,000 years ago. Today, there are roughly 300 breeds of domesticated goats. The wild goat (Capra aegagrus) still remains in fragmented habitat from Turkey to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Ring-Tailed Lemur

[Adopt a Lemur](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Ring-Tailed%20Lemur) These primates have an athletic body and limbs ideal for climbing and bounding from one tree to another. Their legs and strong hands give them the power to climb and hang. They have a non-prehensile tail, covered in characteristic black and white rings, that helps them balance while in the trees.

Conservation Learning Center: Observation Deck

This partially-covered and private outdoor area features a rustic wood deck located above the Zoo’s Conservation Learning Center. The venue is perfect for a unique club or business meeting, luncheon, cocktail hour, dinner, private holiday party, or even a movie night. The adjacent classroom (which can be included) is an ideal spot for food or gift tables, and features a pull-down projector screen and viewing window. The downstairs Conservation Learning Center can also be included during after-hours rentals. Squirrel Monkey

[Adopt a Monkey](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Squirrel%20Monkey) Squirrel monkeys are one of the smallest members of the primate group, measuring in at about 12.5 inches in body length, and about 16 inches of tail. Their tail, unlike many monkey species, is not prehensile. This means that they cannot use their tail to wrap around and grip tree branches and limbs as they climb. Instead, these tiny monkeys rely on their powerful and precise hands to travel through the trees, using their long tail to help them balance.

Giant Anteater

[Adopt an Anteater](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Anteater) Giant anteaters are the largest species of anteater. They are distinguished by their long nose which is comprised of fused upper and lower jaw bones. Also they have rubbery skin, huge claws, and long hairs. Anteaters walk on their knuckles to protect their long claws from becoming dull. They also have an impressively long tongue, reaching up to 24 inches (50cm) in length.

Bearded Dragon

[Adopt a Dragon](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Bearded%20Dragon) Bearded dragons got their name from their spiky "beards." This is actually an expandable throat pouch, which is used for both mating and aggression displays. Bearded dragons have an excellent form of camouflage: their coloration depends on the color of the soil/sand of the region they live in. They can range from a dull brown color to a tan color with red and gold highlights. This allows the bearded dragon to successfully blend in with their surroundings, which is helpful for hunting as well as avoiding predators.

Reid Park Zoo Railway

All aboard for adventure! Located inside the Zoo (from May – February) or just outside the front gate (March and April), the Reid Park Zoo Railway takes riders on a fascinating journey past animal habitats such as giraffe and elephants (in the Zoo) or around the beautiful Gene C. Reid Park large pond (outside the Zoo). The train has a classic locomotive, spacious cars, and also has a roomy caboose for riders in wheelchairs. You can purchase tickets or a multi-use pass at the admissions gate with cash, check, or credit card OR with card/phone at outside train loading. Get up-close to the tallest land mammal in the world! This experience is sure to become a favorite destination spot on your visit to the Zoo. You can buy tickets or a multi-use pass at the admissions gate, or pay at the Giraffe Encounter platform. Cash, check, or credit cards are accepted at both locations. Price: $4 per guest (Children must be accompanied by an adult) Hours: October 1 – May 31: Monday to Friday 10 – 10:45 a.m. Weekends 10 – 10:45 a.m. and noon – 12:30 p.m. June 1 – September 30: Monday to Friday 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. Weekends 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

African Elephant

[Adopt an Elephant](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Elephant) African elephants are the largest living terrestrial mammal. They are a dull, brownish-grey color, and sparsely covered in black, bristle-like hairs. Their wrinkled skin and large ears increase surface area, keeping their body cool. Both males and females have tusks, or modified incisors, that grow throughout their lives; they also have a modified upper lip and nose – the trunk – that has 2 prehensile finger-like lips at the end, used for grasping small and large items.

American Alligator

[Adopt an Alligator](https://reidparkzoo.org/give/adopt-an-animal/?animal=Alligator) American alligators are the largest reptile in North America and can be distinguished by their rounded (or U-shaped) snouts, long powerful tail, thick scales, and webbed toes. They have 74 to 80 conical, sharp teeth and only the upper jaw teeth are visible when the mouth is closed. The eyes and snout are positioned on the top of the head, allowing the alligator to submerge nearly all of its body underwater; this camouflage is further enhanced by their dark olive or black coloration.
